Ant James - operations
Ant has lived in Cornwall since he could walk. He started shaping surfboards in his twenties and lived the bohemian lifestyle before becoming a high-end sailing coach. Pre- Flip Flop Shop, he managed a Cornish surf retail fashion chain, and he’s distilled every last drop of his experience into setting up the business with Zac. Ant’s knowledge of the global flip flop supply chain is second-to-none and his focus, drive and expertise is testament to the steady expansion of this burgeoning UK business. He’s the oil in the cogs, and he does it all while wearing his favourite Sanuks.
Zac Hillier - IT and marketing
This self-confessed computer geek hails from Bath, but spent most of his adult life in Cornwall, after marrying a Cornish maid and growing a family of water babies. Zac is not ashamed about being a flip flop connoisseur, but his first real love is e-commerce (and digital marketing). He spends more time than any normal man should looking at online sales channels and customer buying habits, and is obsessed with improving the buying experience for sun chasers, loungers and flip flop fanatics everywhere.
These flip flop founders have so many things in common: they co-managed Windsport sailing school in Mylor (Cornwall), they both have two kids the same age and spent five years working in the Midlands before returning to Cornwall. They own more watersports equipment than they can fit in their back yards, are keen sailors, bikers and barbecuers. They also both spend far too much of their time talking about women’s flip flops.
Kim Hillier - buyer and giggler
Kim is the other half of Zac, the yin to his yang. She is the super shopper with a nose for fashion, and she gets a kick out of visiting trade shows to handpick the new stock for flipflopshop.co.uk. When she’s not gushing over next year’s footwear and managing the shop’s 530 styles, she dedicates her time to making sure that every single flip flop is competitively priced. In the office, she’s the giggler – she laughs at everything, and reminds the whole crew about the importance of enjoying life (and work).
Calvin Smitheram - warehouse manager
Using our trailblazing warehouse fulfilment system, Calvin runs a tight ship. If you returned a pair of flip flops because they were too big, he’s the one who made sure the order was back in the post within 10 minutes. Cornish born and bred, Calvin spent a decade climbing the ranks of a UK supermarket chain, before leaving the corporate world as a manager in seek of job satisfaction. He joined the warehouse at the birth of the Flop Flop Shop, in March 2015, and has finally found somewhere he can make his mark, wear flip flops to work and go sailing with the ‘bosses’ (when he’s not surfing, kayaking, cliff jumping or free camping on Cornish beaches). Without this ingenious chap, the warehouse just wouldn’t tick.
Hannah Toon - social media queen
Hannah has been plugged into social media since the days of Myspace. Obsessively up-to-date on British popular culture and consumer trends, she’s the voice of Flip Flop Shop on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, drawing inspiration from what flip floppers are wearing, snapping, liking and talking about. When she’s not commenting on flip flop lifestyle, Hannah can be found trekking along Cornish coastal paths, usually with a phone in her hand.
